Our 2nd and last full day in Rome. We decided to do the Rick steves Heart of Rome Walking tour, which started 50m from our place at Campo de’ Fiori where we learned about Bruno, a rebellious monk who refused to recant stating ‘Perhaps you who pronounce this sentence and more fearful than I who receive it’ and was eventually burned at the stake at 1600. The local Rome citizens still celebrate his rebellious spirit with rallies and marches in the piazza.
Then on to numerous fountains, the pantheon where the line was short so we decided to go in, and on to Trevi fountain (crazy busy!) and the Spanish steps.
Back to the apartment by around 1 pm to be in to a cool space for the afternoon and then we decided to use our pilgrim passports one more time to see St Peters Basilica with Steve’s audio tour late in the afternoon since we didn’t have much time there the first time.
The restaurant we hoped to have dinner at didn’t take reservations and the line was long so we wandered and took a chance on a restaurant that turned out to be our best one in Rome. To be honest the food in Rome for us hasn’t been very remarkable after so many amazing dinners through Tuscany. There are just so many it’s hard to weed through the chaff to find the wheat, but this one was quite good!
Back to pack for our next stage - backpacking through the Austrian alps and then bed. We have a 8.40 train in the morning to Innsbruck.
