An early wake up and we meet the apartment owner at 7.45. He has agreed to store our bike luggage while we backpack For the next two weeks. Then breakfast and some lunch sandwiches at the grocery store near the train station. A train and then a bus up to the mountain hamlet of Aschau where we start our walk back to Innsbruck over the next 7 days.
A tougher hiking day of 14 km, 1060m and about 5:20 hrs of hiking. With the bus connection, we got started later than we would have liked - at 10 am. A huge climb greeted us and then, like an uninvited guest, lingered far too long. But the views were fantastic and once we settled in, we had a steady, good pace. A short lunch stop with Schnitzel Brötchen from the grocery store to fuel us, and by 4 pm we were sitting down at the hut picnic tables ordering skiwater (elderberry and seltzer water) and a beer (we are in Austria after all).
A beautiful simple hut in a beautiful area with good food and good beer. Can’t get much better! But it can be a little worse - a large school group showed up and stayed the night. They were mostly well behaved but sounded like a herd of elephants in their room above us! However it didn’t distrub us that much and we were asleep by 8 pm!
