A zero in Innsbruck was very welcomed. We are in a super hotel across the Inn River from old town with easy access to the walking streets and sights. We didn’t have a huge plan, but we got our laundry down the same day we got to town to give us more relaxing time. Then Korean Bibimbap for dinner as we wanted something different. Super good, and the owner was impressed with our knowledge and skill in eating it. I guess the Austrians don't do it the same way as we had been taught at other Korean restaurants.
We ‘slept in’ until 8 am before heading to breakfast which was super. Then we went out exploring. We went to the ‘Golden Dach (roof)’ museum and learned about Maximilian the first who was from the Hapsburg in the 1500s and really built what would become the Hapsburg empire. There were eerie echoes of the way he used media and news to control and create a story of his legacy and what is happening in politics now.
Then we went over to his ‘tomb’ where he was never transferred to but was built to celebrate his life and included 24 ‘black men’ statues (called such due to the petina the bronze statues have) to overlook and pay homage to him, including King Arthur. There was a super unique introduction to the church tomb and Maximilian described as a ‘movie’ but was actually a large three dimensional mechanized art and storytelling pieces with multiple rooms that opened up as the story progresses. Highly suggested if you are in Innsbruck!
Lunch, chores, rest, dinner, to bed so we can catch an early ish train out to the trail to do our last 5 day hiking stretch.
