Today is a ‘nearo’ (near zero’ day) were we only are going 1 mile to the next hut. So we ‘sleep in’ until 7.15 and eat breakfast then head up to pack and head out.
The way is steep up and very fun with lots of scrambling, ladders and iron holds placed in the rock. All the trails have a rating and this is T4, about as high as we would want to go without a harness and some way to clip in. We watch a group put on their via ferrata gear and head up an ‘iron way’. It looks like a fun one, with a tirolian traverse across a gap and lots of easy holds and good steps. This area is a climbers paradise and we want to come back to do some via ferratas! We did one on the Alta Via a number of years ago and it is a blast!
We arrive at the hut after our slow and enjoyable hike and get an early lunch. Then Crys, Sara and Andrew climb up to the top of a knob and relax in the shade of a boulder while I hike a loop of a few km to keep myself moving and entertained. It was some T3 scrambling and very enjoyable.
The rest of the afternoon is relaxing and enjoying the view. Around 3 pm a thunderstorm moves in, the first rain of our entire trip! We feel smug as we check in to our 4 person room as the storm lashes the outside of the building. We’ve been lucky to have been able to reserve separate 4 person rooms for all but one hut where Sara sacrificed to sleep in the ‘lager’.
Dinner was ‘half pension’ ( Prix fixe menu included in the stay for dinner and breakfast) with a great self serve salad bar, soup, and a main course of roasted pork with kohlrabi and green beans in a white sauce and roasted potatoes, Our best hut meal to date!
We played cards while the rain continued and headed to bed around 9 pm.
