Day 3 We have bikes!
It’s always a bit of an unknown about how the bike rental will go. It’s often a meeting in a park, like doing a drug deal. A group of 4 looking for the large white van, texting back and forth arranging the final drop. The dealer brought the good stuff and we got our fix - 4 bikes set up with racks ready to roll! We handed over our bags (not full of money but rather backpacks, hiking shoes and warm clothes for the Austrian leg) which we will pick up in Roma when we drop the bikes in 15 days.
The exchange is complete and we sat on a stoop arranging and setting up the front bag, attaching panniers, getting water bottle holders on. With our packs exploded on the door stoop, of course the owner came home and was not happy with the strewn items and let us know. We recombobulated, locked up our bikes and sat down at a neighboring restaurant for pizza. A slow lunch and hecticness of the 2 hr train ride from Firenze fell off.
We are now sitting on the park on top of the Lucca town wall, listening to a camp singing while we lay in the grass. Lovely!
