We all slept in as late as we could (8 am) and then got up and shared the space we had to get ready. An excellent value room right on the square at the Duomo with 4 beds right next to each other. We are all working to anticipate each others moves and needs and keep the flow!
Breakfast at the cafe next door with a room discount - about ½ of what we have been paying! Then we decided we wanted to climb the tower, which was very enjoyable early in the morning and explore the streets and shops. We found a church at the bottom with a very Roman-feeling central courtyard. Then a walk back up the hill and we found an amazing sandwich shop next to ‘the worlds most famous gelato’ (which also has a world famous long line!).
We took the sandwiches to the old ruins up on the top of the hill (Parco della Rocca) were there was fabulous deep shade and a cool breeze. We feasted on focaccia sandwiches and then laid out our towels and read and napped and enjoyed many hours in the quite park. Sara and Cry went off to sample some wares of the shops and Andrew and I continued our slothing. Glorious!
At 5 pm I headed down to get the same sandwiches to carry with us the next day and stood patiently in the worlds most famous gelato line. I got pistachio and sour cherry and I will say the pistachio was notable for sure! Very good!
We headed back to the room, got ready for dinner and headed out to a beautiful dinner at Osteria il Quattro gatti. (4 cats) we sadly didn’t see any cats (and none were on the menu thankfully). But it was a lovely dinner with a pecorino sampling, shared ravioli and lamb for Crys and I. And a bottle of chanti that was super!
Crys and I wandered around town some more after dinner and made our way down to some old mediveal (between Roman and Renaissance) fountains/pools. Felt like we were the first to explorer them! They felt very Roman to us.
To bed and an early start tomorrow for another long ride to Siena. We will be ready after such a relaxing time here in San Gimignano.
